Ferrari changes Vettel’s engine for the qualifying in Sepang
Following his technical issue at the end of the third free practice session of the Malaysian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel will take part in the qualifying with a new power unit.
The end of FP3 in Sepang gave Ferrari a scare. Indeed, Sebastian Vettel’s car, moving slowly on the track, suffered an electrical problem with its power unit, immediately ending his session.
Caught off guard, the team decided to completely change the engine in the German’s single-seater and have him participate in the qualifying with an improved power unit that was supposed to debut next week at the Japanese Grand Prix.
This power unit is the fourth used by Vettel, which is the last allowed before he incurs penalties. Already 28 points behind in the championship against Lewis Hamilton, this is another handicap the four-time world champion will have to face for an end of season that promises to be competitive.
