Porsche considers entering F1 by 2021
The German manufacturer Porsche is increasingly interested in Formula 1, which could become more financially attractive with the new regulations scheduled for 2021.
Done circling around for Porsche! Formula 1 indeed interests the German manufacturer in light of the new regulations shaping up for the 2021 season.
« Formula 1 might be one of the good places to be! » notably stated Lutz Meschke, the Executive President of Porsche, to our colleagues at Autosport.
The German firm, which has already committed to participating in the Formula E championship starting from the 2019/2020 season, might focus its sports activities on single-seaters after its planned withdrawal from Endurance at the end of the year: « As you know, Formula E is now very important for us, and Formula 1 is always a good topic to consider. I think we are having the right discussions regarding the new power unit. »
In fact, the technical specifications concerning the engine should greatly evolve starting from the 2021 season, with an ongoing focus on cost reduction. A twin-turbo V6 with less technology seems to be the solution that could persuade Porsche to take the plunge: « Absolutely! We need to reduce costs in Formula 1, and this is a good way to achieve that goal, » the German executive further confides.
Porsche’s involvement in Formula 1 should, however, only concern power units. But there already seem to be many interested parties like Red Bull and Toro Rosso or even Williams, who are listening attentively to the negotiations between Liberty Media and the German manufacturer.
