Charles Leclerc is getting closer to Sauber
Charles Leclerc is closer than ever to a seat with Sauber next year. He will also participate in at least four free practice sessions with the Swiss team.
Charles Leclerc’s domination of the F2 championship is undisputed. So much so that the question now is rather when the Monegasque will be crowned champion, not if he will be.
To trace back to a rookie winning the championship, you have to go back to 2009 and a certain Nico Hülkenberg. In this context, Ferrari has every interest in helping their protégé climb the final step. However, it’s out of the question for this to happen directly within the Scuderia since the two current drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen, have been confirmed for next season.
A prospect seems to be gaining more and more traction, and it involves Sauber. Indeed, Frédéric Vasseur immediately broke his contract with Honda to strengthen his association with Maranello, which benefits from an excellent opportunity to give time to its young driver.
It is therefore planned that the Prema driver will take part in at least four free practice sessions by the end of the season, in Malaysia, the United States, Mexico, and Brazil, after having conducted numerous test sessions for Ferrari both in Budapest and for a test on behalf of Pirelli. Depending on his pursuit of the F2 title, he might also participate in an additional session in Abu Dhabi.
Charles Leclerc does not wish to repeat last year’s experience when he participated in sessions with Haas while also competing in GP3. It disrupted him more than it benefited him, and he does not want to find himself in the same situation this season.
It is highly likely that Pascal Wehrlein will give up his seat during these different sessions because the strengthening of the partnership with Ferrari means that Sauber will have even less interest in facilitating the development of a driver within Mercedes’ orbit.
