Official: Sauber will not be powered by Honda in 2018
The Sauber team announced that its partnership with engine supplier Honda, which was supposed to take place in 2018, has been terminated with immediate effect.
Rumors had been circulating since the dismissal of Monisha Kaltenborn and her replacement by Frédéric Vasseur: Sauber and Honda have decided to end their collaboration… even before it began.
The new French leader of the Swiss team remains very evasive about the reasons for this split: « It is very regrettable that we have to discontinue the planned collaboration with Honda immediately. However, this decision was made for strategic reasons and with the best future of Sauber in mind. We want to thank Honda for their collaboration and wish them the best for their future in Formula 1. »
A situation that hardly benefits the Japanese engine manufacturer, who was hoping to rely on Sauber to accelerate the development of its much-criticized hybrid power unit.
The next engine partner for Sauber should be announced very soon.
