Renault puts Sergey Sirotkin and Robert Kubica to the test

Six years after his serious rally accident, Robert Kubica is back behind the wheel of an F1 car, thanks to a trial with Renault. The French team also put Sergey Sirotkin behind the wheel, which could show that Jolyon Palmer's place is more than ever under threat.

Renault puts Sergey Sirotkin and Robert Kubica to the test

Here is one of the most significant losses in the F1 field of the last decade. Promised a great career, Robert Kubica’s trajectory came to an abrupt halt in a rally corner in Italy when the Pole fractured his hand and elbow following an accident.

If the Pole then turned to other categories due to being unable to get back into a competitive F1 seat, he never entirely lost hope of returning. A first step was taken today with a test of a 2012 Lotus E20 on the Valencia circuit, organized by Renault.

If the team had made no prior communication, this test is far from trivial since they also invited their reserve driver, Sergey Sirotkin. This allowed for a direct comparison of the two drivers under exactly the same circumstances. According to our colleague at L’Equipe, this test reportedly turned in favor of the Pole rather than the Russian.

Kubica not out of practice…
For his return to F1, a hundred laps, a race simulation, and better times than Sirotkin.
Polak is back.

It’s clear that reflections are intense regarding the future of Jolyon Palmer, more than ever on the hot seat, after a start to the season far from the ambitions expressed by the team. While Nico Hülkenberg has finished in the points in three of the six races contested, the best result for Jolyon Palmer remains an 11th place on the atypical Monaco circuit. Since his debut last year, he has only scored points once, while his respective teammates have scored 21 points in the same interval.

The 115 laps completed today by Robert Kubica could thus be just a preamble to a return that many had long considered impossible. In any case, the team did not hide their mutual satisfaction regarding this private test…
