The Ferraris will be free to fight in the race

Here’s a record that’s going to be hard to beat: by securing pole position on the streets of Monaco, Kimi Räikkönen has set a new benchmark between two pole positions, with 128 sessions since the 2008 French Grand Prix. This is a record both in terms of the number of Grand Prix and in duration, as it has been 8 years and 11 months since it last happened, while the previous record was held by Mario Andretti with “only” 8 years.

But Kimi Räikkönen is not a man to overly concern himself with records and therefore remained very measured in his initial reaction at the end of this session. He simply stated: “Obviously, first place is the best for the start.”

The big question is whether a possible team order could be given between the two Ferrari drivers, as Sebastian Vettel has a clear lead in the championship, especially with Lewis Hamilton’s poor performance today. But the Finn brushed the question aside: « We have a lot of respect for each other. We have the right to fight on the track. Nothing has changed in this regard. »

Same story from Sebastian Vettel, who found it hard to hide his disappointment at being outpaced by his teammate despite having been dominant during the various practice sessions. He believes that he may have been overambitious in the second sector of his quick lap, which prevented him from outperforming his teammate.

Note that the Ferrari driver received a reprimand from the stewards for crossing the white line at the pit exit during his last attempt in Q3. However, this will not have an impact for the rest of the weekend.

The Scuderia is therefore in an ideal position to end a dry spell in Monaco, which dates back to Michael Schumacher’s victory in 2001.
