Vettel: « We could have won all the races »

Ferrari’s start to the season can be analyzed according to the theory of the glass being half-empty or half-full. On the positive side, Sebastian Vettel has been able to secure two victories, which stands in stark contrast to the 2016 season, where he never heard the German anthem celebrating one of his victories. His five podium finishes in as many races allow him to lead the championship, something that hadn’t happened to him since his Red Bull days.

But if the glass is seen as half empty, the driver bearing the number 5 had to bow three times to the Mercedes drivers, despite securing pole position in Russia or leading for most of the race in Barcelona.

The Scuderia driver seems to strongly support the first option. In any case, he is very satisfied with his start to the season: « Obviously, we are never happy when we are beaten, but we could have won all the races so far. We have always been in the fight on Sundays, which is the most important. So, I am not worried; it’s a long season. »

On a circuit where confidence is essential, the German does not lack it and does not hide his ambition for this weekend either: « Yes, the pole is possible. Here it’s about having confidence in your car, and we have the tools at our disposal to perform well. »

When asked about the importance of the increased width of cars in the streets of Monte Carlo, he didn’t seem to give it much importance. He joined his various competitors questioned on the subject since the beginning of the weekend, starting with his teammate, Kimi Räikkönen.

In his usual style, the Finn, who became a father for the second time on May 16th, shared his ambivalent feelings about the Monaco Grand Prix: « It’s not the most pleasant place to work because there are lots of people and not much space to work. But I do like the circuit, make no mistake. However, if the car doesn’t work, it can be a very long weekend… »

Let’s hope for the Reds that this won’t be the case. As a reminder, the Scuderia has only won eight times on this legendary track. The last victory was sixteen years ago, with Michael Schumacher, on the top step of the podium, on May 27, 2001.
