Romain Grosjean is not optimistic about the race
Romain Grosjean made a mistake on his last flying lap in Q2, but got no further in qualifying. A fourteenth-place finish punctuated a difficult afternoon in terms of both driving and understanding his single-seater.
The qualifying session started rather poorly for Romain Grosjean, who spun in the last chicane during his first flying lap. The inconsistency of his car posed significant challenges for him.
« We suffered from an extremely inconsistent car balance. The wind affects the car a lot depending on the gusts. This can change the lap. In addition to that, we need to rethink some of our fundamental settings on the car. » declared the French driver, a hint of disappointment in his voice.
Like all the teams, Haas has also brought updates to their cars. But Grosjean is not completely satisfied yet: « The updates have brought a small part of what I expected, but not as much. »
A new floor was notably made available to the drivers, but the Frenchman only discovered it today, as the draw conducted by his team to determine who would benefit from it on Friday favored his teammate Kevin Magnussen: « I had to go through the whole Friday without being able to adjust the car with the new setup, it certainly doesn’t help. I have a driving style that when the car is inconsistent, I can’t manage to drive it. I’m always on the edge, and if the car has reactions that are not controllable or understandable, I’m in trouble. Compared to Gutierrez, this was sometimes the case in qualifying because he felt better, and it’s also the case with Magnussen. »
The Haas driver is therefore not very optimistic for tomorrow and for his race pace: “It’s going to be a tough race. Yesterday, we saw a Ferrari in the gravel, there was a Mercedes at one point. The tires go so badly at certain moments… there will be opportunities, we have to seize them and stay on track. But as soon as the tarmac is abrasive, the tires can’t handle the load and demand of the cars,” concluded the Frenchman.
