Marchionne: There’s no point talking about Sebastian Vettel’s future
Sebastian Vettel's contract with Ferrari expires at the end of next season. But Sergio Marchionne believes it's time to wait and see if Ferrari can provide him with a winning car before opening talks on an extension.
Traditionally, Ferrari organizes a Christmas dinner with the press every year to celebrate the end of the year. A perfect opportunity to convey messages: this year was no exception.
FIAt Chrysler Automotive group president, Sergio Marchionne, made it clear that his two world champion drivers should not expect to be automatically extended, starting with Sebastian Vettel: « With Vettel, it makes no sense to talk about an extension now. We first need to understand if he is comfortable with us in 2017. We must provide him with a car capable of winning. Otherwise, there’s no point in discussing the future. »
The message is crystal clear to the German driver. But the Italian leader also made it known that he expects a much less tense attitude from his driver, especially outwardly: « He wants to win with us, we know that. Can we guarantee him that? In exchange, he must drive with more restraint, be calmer, less agitated. He must focus on winning on the track and beating the other cars, not engaging in personal battles. »
Thus, it is easily understood that the senior official was not pleased with the numerous radio outbursts, particularly during the Mexican Grand Prix when he had simply insulted Charlie Whiting, the race director. He was then compelled to send a formal letter of apology to avoid any sanctions during the next event.
Sergio Marchionne also notes that Kimi Räikkönen could also retire at the end of the 2017 season: « I am happy with Räikkönen’s season. He will race again in 2017 but what will happen afterwards? Will he want to retire or continue? »
The big boss has therefore conveyed his messages, which will undoubtedly have been heard in the corridors of Maranello. But after dismissing James Allison, their technical director, in the middle of the season and appointing an engine specialist in his place when the Scuderia’s recurring problems are related to aerodynamics, one might say that Ferrari risks experiencing another very complicated season.
