Ron Dennis confident of McLaren’s progress in 2017

Ron Dennis is already assessing the McLaren-Honda team’s season, noting that even if the team hasn’t met expectations, it is clearly improving in terms of points collected compared to last year, with four races remaining in the championship. Dennis points out that at the same time in 2015, the constructor had only accumulated 27 points compared to the current 62 in the overall standings, which is more than double.

The English boss even tries to evaluate his team’s performance with numbers: “About five out of ten,” he concedes to Sky Sports’ microphone. “We’re just not good enough, we’re here to win races and we’re not winning any.”

Dennis is, however, placing a lot of hope on the change in technical regulations in Formula 1 next year to catch up with his rivals for the victory and remains calm about the direction taken by the Woking team: “We are well advanced on the car and are making good progress.”

Moreover, Ron Dennis is convinced that the planned changes will showcase all the drivers’ talent, suggesting a return to a more “authentic” competition: « As everyone will tell you, the cars will be four, maybe five or six seconds faster, and I think that’s when the great drivers will start to excel ».
