Monza extends contract by three years

The bluffing game is now over. Indeed, after months of negotiations and discussions one way or another, an agreement has finally been reached between the Italian Automobile Club and Bernie Ecclestone’s FOM.

To announce this news, a press conference was called in the middle of the second practice session on Friday afternoon, which could only disrupt the many journalists focused on covering the session.

But the F1’s chief financial officer nevertheless uttered the magic words, awaited by the thousands of spectators worried about the future of their event, even though the contract is not yet formally signed: “Unfortunately, we cannot legally sign here. More importantly, we have reached an agreement after a few months of negotiations between the lawyers. We will go into detail together and we will sign in England. The contract is only for three years but I hope we will be here for another 100 years.”

This extension is not a surprise, especially since the announcement that Heineken would become the title sponsor of the event this year. If Bernie Ecclestone offered this honor for the arrival of a major sponsor, it was very unlikely that he would remove the destination from the calendar as early as the following season.
