Max Verstappen and Daniil Kvyat swap places in Spain
It didn't take long for the punishment to hit: after his catastrophic Russian Grand Prix, Daniil Kvyat lost his Red Bull seat. He returns to Toro Rosso and will be replaced by Max Verstappen.
Max Verstappen is a young man in a hurry. While he was torn between the development program of Mercedes and Red Bull, he chose the latter when a seat at Toro Rosso was offered to him for 2015.
This winter, he made it known that he would fight for podiums starting next season, being with a top team. He even took care to say that it would be with Red Bull or Ferrari or Mercedes, in order not to ease the pressure on his managers.
Finally, he will have this opportunity even earlier than expected since Red Bull has decided to give him a seat starting with the Spanish Grand Prix, as Christian Horner explains: “Max has proven to be an incredible young talent. His performance at Toro Rosso has been very impressive so far, and we are thrilled to give him the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing.”
If this is a great promotion for the Dutchman, it is also a sanction for Daniil Kvyat, who must return to Toro Rosso, a year and a half after replacing Sebastian Vettel. He will therefore have to be able to prove himself again, even though he was on the podium just two races ago: “Dany will be able to continue his development at Toro Rosso, a team he knows well. This will give him the chance to regain his form and show his potential.”
But when you know the long list of drivers left on the sidelines by the Red Bull program, you might think that the Russian’s days in F1 could be numbered. This opens up great opportunities for the Frenchman Pierre Gasly, currently the third driver at Red Bull. It will be essential for him to excel during the GP2 season.
In any case, Red Bull’s decision quickly elicited reactions, especially among the drivers. Jenson Button, for example, didn’t hesitate to express his surprise about such a decision on his Twitter account:
Really? one bad race and Kyvat’s dropped, what about the podium in the previous race? #Shortmemories https://t.co/8YDBZPDP3v
