Ferrari receives almost 20% of FOM payments
Although Ferrari is not yet in a position to compete on equal terms with Mercedes on the track, it is still the world champion from an economic point of view, thanks to its special status which entitles it to almost 20% of the sums paid by the FOM to the teams.
If Sauber and Sahara Force India have decided to file a complaint with the European Commission, it’s because they believe that the distribution of revenue in F1 is far from fair. Looking at the revenue projections for rewarding the 2015 season, established by our colleagues at Autosport, one can only agree with them.
Indeed, once again, Ferrari emerges as the big winner of the year, receiving 168 million euros, which rewards a second-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship. Nevertheless, 55% of this sum is not due to its on-track performance but rather to the special status negotiated during the last round of talks on the Concorde Agreements. Thus, over 61 million euros are awarded to reward the team for participating in all the championships in history. These bonuses allow it to receive more than Sauber and Manor, who are only rewarded for their 8th and 10th places.
The Swiss team, grappling with significant financial difficulties, finds itself with an expected payment of 47 million euros while McLaren, which only finished 9th, will still benefit from 73 million euros, thanks to its status as a historic team. That is 14 million euros more than a team like Sahara Force India, which had the best season in its history, finishing 5th.
Same income disparity between Red Bull and Williams. While Frank and Claire’s team finished on the third step of the final podium, its revenues reached 76.5 million euros, whereas Red Bull, 4th on the track, achieved 125 million euros, including over 30 million for being the first to sign a commercial agreement with the FOM…
This bonus received by the Milton Keynes team is therefore equivalent to that received by Mercedes, which had negotiated such an amount if it was able to win two Constructors’ World Championship titles.
