Alexander Rossi bounces back in IndyCar
Without a seat in F1, Alexander Rossi still managed to find a full-time drive for 2016. He will be in IndyCar, with the Andretti Autosport team.
While he hoped to secure the second seat at Manor, it was ultimately his GP2 rival, Rio Haryanto, who got the spot. Although he still dreams of making his place in F1, he couldn’t afford to spend a season without racing.
That’s why he ultimately decided to return to the United States, committing to IndyCar. However, it had been a long time since he left the American circuit, as his last competition was in 2008 when he won the Formula BMW championship. He almost took the leap last year, but the opportunity to drive for Racing Engineering in GP2 eventually arose.
It is therefore a whole new discipline that he will have to discover in a very short time. The test session scheduled for March 1st at the Sebring circuit will be essential to familiarize him with his new discipline. He must be competitive right away to be a major player in the championship, which would allow him to attempt a return to F1 next season: « I can’t wait to make my debut in IndyCar this season and I am proud to race for a team of Andretti Autosport’s caliber. As a race car driver first and foremost, I am eager to begin. Our goal is to be competitive immediately at the first race in St. Petersburg. »
He might even try to keep a foothold in Formula One this season by securing a test driver position. If that were the case, he would be following the same path as Stoffel Vandoorne, who faces the same issue. The Belgian decided to commit to Japanese Super Formula, with the support of Honda.
Now remains to be seen if this season across the Atlantic will indeed allow him to be a starter in F1 in 2017. Or if it will launch an entirely new career far from Europe…
