Nobuharu Matsushita becomes a test driver for McLaren
For his second season in Europe, Nobuharu Matsushita will aim for the GP2 title and be a test driver for McLaren.
That he was retained for a second season in GP2 was already a strong sign since his predecessor, Takuya Izawa, did not have this opportunity.
But Honda clearly intends to show that it believes in the potential of its 22-year-old protégé by having him join the ranks of McLaren as a test and development driver. He will therefore complement the simulator work done by the two main drivers, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, as well as by the reserve driver, Stoffel Vandoorne. The Belgian and the Japanese know each other very well, having been teammates at ART Grand Prix.
He can therefore only be delighted with such an opportunity: « This season, I am thrilled to join McLaren Honda as a test and development driver. Entering the world of Formula 1 is a childhood dream and a huge advancement in my career. I will do my best to help the team on the track, gathering data to transmit for the development and setup of the car through my work in the simulator. »
Nevertheless, like Stoffel Vandoorne last year, he will be scarcely present in the F1 paddock as he will primarily attempt to win the GP2 title: “As a GP2 driver, my sole objective for 2016 is to win the championship. I believe I have the best package around me to triumph and achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a Formula 1 driver.”
