Penalized, Fernando Alonso loses his tenth place to Max Verstappen
The stewards were definitely very busy at the end of the Russian Grand Prix: they also handed a five-second penalty to Fernando Alonso for exceeding track limits. As a result, he loses the point for 10th place to the benefit of Max Verstappen.
The joy was short-lived for McLaren: while the team could celebrate a double points finish, Fernando Alonso lost the benefit of his tenth place. The reason is that he went too wide at turn 16. These additional five seconds therefore allow Max Verstappen to get back into the points for the seventh time this season.
Fernando Alonso therefore stated: « Having both cars in the top 10, where we didn’t expect to be particularly strong, is a nice surprise. It’s just a shame to lose it afterwards. In fact, the car was very effective throughout the race. I think we were able to take better care of our tires than the cars around us. On an afternoon where every detail could make a difference, we made the most of it. »
