Melbourne extends until 2023
Despite the interest expressed by other Australian cities, the Australian Grand Prix will remain in Melbourne at least until 2023.
In 2013, Bernie Ecclestone declared that he was ready to sign a 50-year contract with Melbourne. Of course, this was one of the traditional media statements from the F1 supremo, indicating that negotiations were already underway.
These have therefore just concluded for a much shorter duration since the new contract extends until 2023. For an event held on the same circuit since 1996, this new contract will thus allow it to surpass the milestone of 25 consecutive editions.
For the city, the Grand Prix represents a major event that ensures it a global visibility. The local authorities were obviously stakeholders in the discussions, as shown by the statement from Daniel Andrews, the Premier of the State of Victoria: “There is nothing like the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne and the buzz it creates around the state. It attracts visitors from all over the world and shows the world that we have the best of everything.”
He also takes the opportunity to settle scores with his counterparts from other Australian states who would have liked to host the race: « Our competitors from other states have not hidden their desire to steal it from us, but it is here to stay. I can assure the people of Victoria that Daniel Ricciardo is not about to race on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. »
