The wind hampers Ferrari at Silverstone
While they had been able to fight with the Mercedes since the start of the weekend, Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel could only manage 5th and 6th in qualifying. They will therefore try to get back ahead of the Williams in the race.
The two drivers in red did not hide their disappointment after a qualifying session that placed them behind their main championship rivals. Their difficulties mainly stemmed from the wind, which often affects the balance of the Ferrari, as Kimi Räikkönen explains: « It wasn’t an easy qualifying session, with a lot of wind. The car’s handling wasn’t ideal. It was complicated for everyone because conditions were changing from lap to lap and corner to corner. We know that when there’s wind, it’s not easy for us. We’ve improved the car in these conditions, but it’s still difficult to complete a full lap. »
For the Finnish driver, it’s mainly these weather conditions that explain why Ferrari finds itself behind Williams: « Obviously, we cannot be happy with a 5th and 6th place. It’s a bit disappointing. We did our best and hope it will be better tomorrow. I don’t think we’re falling behind. It’s mainly the different conditions we had today. »
Similarly, Sebastian Vettel was not satisfied with his own performance: « It was more difficult than expected. We will have to analyze what happened, but it was clearly not “clean” on my part. I struggled to find the right balance. Tomorrow should be different since our race pace should be good. »
The battle with the Williams cars promises to be intense, even though the single-seaters of Sir Frank Williams generally have the advantage in terms of top speed.
