Nico Rosberg falls short of pole position by one-tenth
Nico Rosberg was very satisfied with his first lap in Q3, but he still finished a tenth behind Lewis Hamilton. He still hopes to be able to win in the race.
The German driver thought he had done what was necessary during his first attempt in qualifying, especially since he had dominated his teammate in Q1 and Q2: « My first lap in Q3 was fast, and I thought I had done what was needed, but when I looked at the screen on the steering wheel, I saw that Lewis was only a tenth ahead, which is really annoying! »
His technical problems then reappeared, as has been the case during every session this weekend. This time, he had a grip issue. However, he is not giving up and still hopes for victory: « During the second stint, I was improving but something seemed weird with my front left tire. I had no grip. We have to look into what happened. I’ve had a complicated weekend so far, with some issues on my car, but it’s still possible for tomorrow, as we saw in the last race. »
As for Lewis Hamilton, he did not experience the same fate as last year when he eased off in the last lap while he was in the lead. Many competitors were able to improve, and he ended up sixth on the grid. This time, he also eased off but knowing that his teammate was also behind on his time. He thus preferred to save his car for the race and intends to repeat his performance from last year and win his third Grand Prix at home.
