Lewis Hamilton doesn’t back down against Nico Rosberg
If he was beaten for the first time this season by Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton believes he can still hope to climb to the top step of the podium.
Nico Rosberg could only be satisfied with his performance in qualifying, which saw him beat his teammate for the first time this season. His performance was thus praised by his director, Toto Wolff: « It was a magnificent lap from Nico in Q3 to take his first pole of the season. It shows how quickly things change in Formula 1. There were a lot of people questioning whether he could bounce back or if he had lost his performance. But they need to remember that these men are strong. They are not as affected by the highs and lows in their results as people think. Nico stayed focused this weekend, did a great job, and delivered a very fine performance. »
But the German may have managed to secure his first pole of the season thanks to his teammate’s problems. Indeed, the reigning champion struggled to find the right settings: “I think he was more comfortable than less with the car’s balance. The rear was turning a bit less quickly today, which means you had oversteer and poor traction. So I lost a lot of time in the second sector.”
Lewis Hamilton thus believes that victory is still possible, even though in the first 24 editions of the Spanish Grand Prix, the pole-sitter won 18 times: « In the end, 2nd is not so bad. Obviously, it would have been easier to start on pole, but that doesn’t mean you can’t win from other places on the grid. Generally, the outside on the grid is cleaner here. You can usually get a good start from that position. The main opportunities to gain places are the start and the pit stops since it’s difficult to overtake. So I’ll try to do my best. »
The battle promises to be intense throughout the race. All the better for the spectacle since the two Mercedes seem to have widened their lead over the rest of the competition.
