Caterham F1 wants to leave Leafield
Is the Leafield factory cursed? After being the headquarters of Super Aguri, it could also see its current owner, Caterham, leave. Searches for a new location have already begun.
When the team was owned by Tony Fernandes, he aimed to streamline his various investments by bringing together under one roof both his F1 team as well as the GP2 and Moto2 teams.
However, the new owners of the F1 team have only acquired the team itself, leaving the other two to their previous owner. It is therefore not very practical for the different structures to coexist when the owners are no longer the same. Especially since the new owners do not hesitate to blame their predecessors for the financial state of their acquisition…
Manfredo Ravetto, the new team principal, stated: “We know the road ahead will be bumpy and we don’t expect it to be easy, but we will tackle it as it comes. To clear any doubts, I would like to add that Leafield remains the team’s base, although it is no secret that we are looking for a more suitable alternative.”
This statement comes in a context where assets have been seized to meet the demands of a number of creditors. To avoid the risk of this happening again by the end of the season, the team has decided not to return the equipment and cars used in Japan and Russia to its English factory, but instead to the German base used by Colin Kolles, the advisor to the new owners.
