Saturday: Felipe Massa and Williams managed to right the ship in Singapore
While the team had been struggling since the beginning of the weekend, the qualifying session went much better for Williams. Felipe Massa could have even secured pole position but settled for 6th place. Valtteri Bottas is two places behind the Brazilian.
Felipe Massa (No. 19) – 7th and 6th
The main satisfaction for the Brazilian is that his team managed to solve the problems they encountered during the first day of testing: « It was a promising session because we made significant progress compared to yesterday and we are close to our rivals for the championship. What is really encouraging is that we identified yesterday’s problem and the changes we made improved the car as we had hoped. So it is a very good job by the team. »
Leading at the end of Q3’s first round, he finished the session in 6th place but the gaps were very tight: « We could have finished 4th, especially considering how close it was, but 6th is a good result. »
The one who almost lost the 2008 title on the streets of Singapore knows he has to expect anything during this race and that he must be strong to finish in the points: « Tomorrow is going to be tough. It’s the longest race of the year. The conditions are demanding and there could be safety cars. So our first goal is to have both cars in the points. »
Valtteri Bottas (No. 99) – 8th and 8th
Like his teammate, the Finn is pleased with the progress made compared to Friday: “We made significant progress compared to yesterday’s practice sessions and again in qualifying. The car’s mechanical settings have improved, and we managed to get the tires into the right temperature window, which we couldn’t do yesterday.”
He regrets having made a few small mistakes in Q3, which cost him a better place on the grid: “My out lap during my last stint in Q3 was a bit compromised, and I made a mistake in the first corner. Since it was very tight, I could have gained more positions. However, we must be happy with where we are because we know we have the pace to fight with the cars around us.”
