Sunday: Bottas puts Williams on the podium, Massa cannot avoid Räikkönen
At the price of a formidable comeback at the wheel of a very fast car, Valtteri Bottas secures a fantastic second place. For his part, Felipe Massa was unlucky throughout his 200th Grand Prix weekend, caught in the accident with Kimi Räikkönen.
Valtteri Bottas (No. 77) – 2nd
Before the start, the rising Finnish driver expected a fun race but was nonetheless surprised to have such a fast car, allowing him to snatch the second place. He stated after the race: « During the first stint, we quickly climbed up the field and that required taking some risks. I am so happy for the team; they worked on the race pace, and it showed. We thought we’d finish in the points today but not on the podium, and the strategists did an amazing job. I was really disappointed for Felipe today on his 200th race, and it was really nice of him to come to the podium with the team; I really appreciated that gesture. We are a stronger team than at the beginning of the season, and it won’t be easy to stay near the top, but we are doing everything to achieve that. »
Felipe Massa (No.19) – Retirement (accident)
For his 200th Grand Prix, the Brazilian driver was not favored by luck. He declares: « It was really a tough weekend. It was a bad start but after that, I managed to catch up with everyone and overtake a few cars in the first corners. The car was excellent. Then there was the accident. Kimi crossed the track and I had no chance to avoid him, and unfortunately, there was too much damage to continue. Fortunately, I tell myself that it could have been a much more serious accident. I hope Kimi is okay but for me, it’s a weekend to forget; it’s not the 200th Grand Prix I had planned. »
