Sunday: First Difficult Weekend for Caterham’s New Management
The race was not easy for the Caterham F1 team: while Kamui Kobayashi managed to reach the finish despite being involved in the starting accident, Marcus Ericsson retired from the British Grand Prix as soon as it restarted.
Kamui Kobayashi (No. 10) – 15th
Involved in the accident following the first start, the Japanese driver swerved onto the grass to avoid hitting Kimi Räikkönen’s Ferrari. But his first thought was for the Finn’s health. He states: « The most important thing for me was to make sure Kimi was okay. It was a big crash, and while I was lucky to avoid it, I hope he is alright. The initial reports are that he’s not too bad but I really hope that’s the case. »
He relates the rest of the race: « We started under the safety car and I was just behind my teammate when I saw he was retiring, so I pushed to catch up with the group just ahead. The car felt very different compared to the start – the aerodynamic balance had changed, and it was clear we had lost downforce, almost certainly because of the swerve I had made, but I kept pushing as hard as I could. […] Then I had a lonely race – the pack was way too far ahead of me, and I had just Chilton far behind me, so I focused on bringing the car to the finish. »
Marcus Ericsson (No. 9) – Retired (suspension)
After making his best start of the season, the Swede avoided Kimi Räikkönen’s accident and rejoined the race in 16th behind the safety car. He talks about his very brief appearance after the restart: « At turn 6, I hit something on the curb that destroyed my suspension and that was the end of the race. It’s a shame to retire today because, even though qualifying didn’t go as planned, this weekend was going well for me, and I wanted a good race today, and now on to Hockenheim, a track I’ve always enjoyed. »
