Webber thinks that Vettel “will come back”
Mark Webber, the former teammate of Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull, shared his impressions with Fairfax Media about the situation at Red Bull in 2014.
Partly echoing Helmut Marko’s recent statements on the Heppenheim native, the Australian believes that Sebastian Vettel has been going through a difficult period since the beginning of the season due to the new regulations and the issues faced by the world champion team.
Part of the problems faced by the German comes from the adaptability and consistency of his new teammate Daniel Ricciardo. On this point, Mark Webber is not surprised by the qualities demonstrated by the young Australian driver. Indeed, he states: “I’m not surprised by Daniel. I said before Melbourne that it would be 50/50 with Seb and everyone said I was crazy, but Seb will come back – he just needs time to adapt to the car.”
The former Red Bull driver puts his former teammate’s situation into the context of the current season. He states: « For Seb, it’s difficult at the moment because Mercedes are the absolute favorites. But as soon as Seb gets back to winning, he will be back. It’s like with Fernando [Alonso]. When he sees an opportunity to win, he’s always there. »
According to Webber, Ricciardo did not have the same pressure or frustration as Vettel. He adds: « In the first half of the season, the fact that only Mercedes could win was easier for Daniel to accept. »
Finally, he thinks it’s just a matter of time before seeing Sebastian Vettel back on top. He concludes: « The last few races were good for Seb, but he didn’t get that little push from fate. So he’s going to rely on that. He knows his day will come. »
