Alonso is probably the best in F1 according to the Mercedes boss
Fernando Alonso's talent, whose future seems uncertain, has been praised by one of his rivals, Dieter Zetsche, the head of the Daimler group which includes Mercedes, who have been dominating since the start of the season.
According to Dieter Zetsche, the head of Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes, Fernando Alonso is surely one of the best drivers in Formula 1. While the Spaniard is rumored to leave Scuderia Ferrari at the end of the year to join McLaren or Mercedes next year, Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda have denied the information.
But Zetsche was not stingy with compliments towards the Spanish driver: Alonso is probably the best driver on the grid, even proving it in a slightly less competitive car.
With a Ferrari that is less competitive than the Mercedes, the double world champion does what he can behind the Silver Arrows. He is currently 3rd in the drivers’ championship but already 51 points behind the leader – Lewis Hamilton – after only five races.
The CEO of Daimler also told the Spanish agency EFE that the skills of the drivers are more important than ever this year with the transition to the new power unit – built around a 1.6L V6 turbo engine.
« The drivers with the new power unit must be very good because the cars are no longer the ‘trams’ we could see in the past. Today’s cars are exciting; it doesn’t bother me that the same team has won all the races so far. It’s the other teams’ job to match Mercedes’ performance, even though we still have many areas for improvement, » added Zetsche.
