Sunday: Hamilton and Rosberg secure a royal one-two for Mercedes
At the end of a thrilling race, especially towards the finish, Lewis Hamilton wins by a slight margin ahead of Nico Rosberg. The Barcelona race, considered a decider, confirmed Mercedes' overwhelming dominance.
Lewis Hamilton (No. 44) – Winner
The new leader of the world drivers’ championship is particularly happy with his victory in Spain, which was a first for him. He states: « It’s fantastic to achieve my first victory after eight attempts, and it’s really difficult to put into words what I feel at this moment.
We have our Mercedes-Benz bosses here today and it’s great for the team to be able to give them a one-two finish. In my entire career, I’ve never had such a car or such a performance gap.
Then he reflected on his race: Nico drove in a fantastic manner and I fought hard to keep him behind me, but I barely succeeded in the end. I had the same problems with the car today as I did yesterday afternoon in qualifying. I couldn’t attack the corners properly due to sudden oversteer and that’s where Nico was catching up with me.
Nico Rosberg (No. 6) – 2nd
The now second in the world drivers’ championship wasn’t far from his second victory of the season. He explains: The race was so tight at the end today, and with one more lap, I could have tried to overtake Lewis for the first time. My start was bad. It’s a weakness of mine, and I’m going to try to improve. Once it was clear that I was in second position, we chose to adopt a slower strategy using the prime tires in the middle stint to have a chance to beat Lewis at the end when I was on options.
Then he briefly mentions the next Grand Prix: « The next race in Monaco is not only my home race but I also have great memories of my victory there last year. »
