Saturday: Hamilton ahead of Rosberg for an all-Mercedes front row
Even though Nico Rosberg finished FP3 on top, as well as Q1 and Q2, he was edged out by Lewis Hamilton for pole position. The Briton will therefore start from the first place on the grid tomorrow and intends to take advantage to win.
Lewis Hamilton (#44) – 2nd and Pole position
The Briton secured his 4th pole position in 5 races this year but it wasn’t easy today to achieve it: « I am thrilled to have clinched the pole position because I had a rather complicated day in the car, especially after such a good day yesterday. I was really happy on Friday and we changed a few small things. But it made a big difference today as the track conditions changed. […] On my last stint, I finally managed to get the maximum out of the car and myself to secure the pole and I’m so happy to have achieved it. »
Starting from pole position, the goal is simple, to win: « I have never won on this track and I would love to do it, because my support in Barcelona has been growing over the years and I have great fans here in Spain. We will give everything to secure the victory tomorrow. »
Nico Rosberg (No. 6) – 1st and 2nd
The German long believed he could launch from pole position but was ultimately beaten at the last moment: « I had good sensations throughout the day and enjoyed the qualifying. I put in a good lap at the end but Lewis simply did a better job in Q3. »
Even if this second place is not the easiest for the start and the race, Rosberg remains confident about his chances to pass Hamilton and win in Barcelona: « Starting second is always a disadvantage, but there is a long straight to the first corner, so I hope to get a better start than Lewis tomorrow and overtake him. It will be a long race where tire degradation will be a key factor, so maybe there will be some opportunities to take advantage. I’m looking forward to tomorrow, and I’ll give everything to make the most of this wonderful Silver Arrow we have right now, and hopefully, I can widen the gap at the top of the championship. »
