Simona de Silvestro covers 112 laps for Sauber
The big day has arrived for Simona de Silvestro: she completed her first laps behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car for Sauber.
Upon joining the Swiss team’s orbit last February, the former IndyCar driver had clearly stated that she wished to secure a main driver’s seat by 2015 and that the current season should help her achieve this goal.
The first test conducted today on the Fiorano circuit is thus the first step in this long journey. To do so, the team completely revamped the livery of its single-seater, adorning it with the colors of the sponsors brought in by the Swiss driver. It is noteworthy that she is largely supported by companies linked to clean energy, which may be attracted by the new engine regulations that favor hybrid technology. It is, however, ironic that the single-seater driven during this test was two years old (due to in-season testing regulations) and was not equipped with KERS…
Simona de Silvestro was able to compare what separates an IndyCar single-seater from an F1: « Even though it’s very special to drive a Formula One, I wasn’t too nervous this morning. I was more focused on the work I had to do. But after completing my first lap, I realized it was my first lap in a Formula One and that it was something really special. What impressed me the most was the car’s aerodynamic downforce and its braking. When I did my first lap, the brakes were cold, but even then, the deceleration was greater than what I had experienced so far. The G-forces are much more intense than what I was used to in IndyCar. »
She managed to complete 112 laps during the day, which is impressive for a first attempt. She will have a second session today to continue getting accustomed to all the elements to consider while driving an F1 car, ensuring she is as well-prepared as possible for a test with a current single-seater, which would allow her to obtain her valuable Super Licence, essential to become a full-time F1 driver.
