Ferrari wants to simplify its decision-making processes

Stefano Domenicali’s resignation allowed for a wake-up call within the Scuderia, whose performances since the start of the season have fallen short of Maranello’s expectations. By appointing Marco Mattiacci, Luca di Montezemolo selected an insider but someone with no F1 experience, hoping he could bring an outsider’s perspective and steer the team in a new direction.

The new strongman of Maranello had luck on his side with Fernando Alonso’s first podium of the season at the Chinese Grand Prix. But that is obviously not enough. He is now tackling the team’s processes to climb up the hierarchy.

The identified key is the speed of execution. Luca di Montezemolo has thus requested to tackle the bureaucracy at Maranello, which tends to slow down the decision-making process and the implementation of improvements. Pressure is also being put on the Scuderia’s suppliers, who are asked to deliver their parts more quickly, whether for prototypes or for final parts.

Similarly, Ferrari wants to rely less on the services of external providers, especially consultants. The Italian team is thus contrary to the strategy chosen by Lotus, which has decided to massively use the services of the consulting firm Altran. However, Ferrari’s management is not opposed to the idea of following Mercedes’ strategy, which has been to look for personnel in the market to maximize internal expertise.

With people like Bob Bell or Ross Brawn on the market, Ferrari might be tempted to bring out the checkbook…
