Sunday: Hamilton and Rosberg deliver Mercedes a 3rd one-two finish
For the third time in a row, the German team achieves the double. Lewis Hamilton wins after a well-controlled solo performance. Nico Rosberg, handicapped by missing telemetry, still manages to finish in second place on the podium.
Lewis Hamilton (#44) – Winner
After the Grand Prix arrival, the English driver congratulated his team for the work done on the track and at the factory: « The car is just incredible; in the last laps, I pushed a little more to keep the tires up to temperature and it was great to just drive. We had to make a lot of changes after FP2 in terms of car setup but after Saturday’s rain, we didn’t know exactly what to expect today. A lot of hard work has been done, sitting with the engineers to leave nothing to chance and take necessary steps in anticipation of today. »
But his eyes are already on the next Grand Prix: « We are undoubtedly on a good streak, I’m working hard, the team is working hard, and we just want to improve even more when we get to Europe. »
Nico Rosberg (No. 6) – 2nd
Before the start, the German already had telemetry issues, so there was no communication between the car and the wall: « The engineers couldn’t see what was happening in my car, and consequently, they couldn’t adjust my clutch for the start […] That’s why I had a very bad start. There was contact with Bottas in turn 1, and I thought it was over. Luckily, the car wasn’t damaged and in the following laps, the pace was good which allowed me to gain some positions. »
He established a positive assessment of a weekend during which he focused on damage control by finishing in a fine second place: « I gained important points again, which makes me happy. It’s great to return to Europe leading the championship. In Barcelona, the goal will be to have a normal weekend and reclaim the top position. It was an incredible team result and the whole team can be very proud. Congratulations to Lewis for this fantastic weekend. »
