The first corner of the Sakhir circuit named Michael Schumacher
The Sakhir circuit, located in Bahrain, has decided to honor Michael Schumacher by naming the first corner of its track after the seven-time German world champion.
While Michael Schumacher remains in a coma at the Grenoble hospital following a skiing accident at the end of December, the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) has decided to honor the seven-time German world champion by naming the first corner after him.
This is what the boss of the Sakhir circuit, Chairman Zayed al Zayani, stated in a statement: From his first appearance in 2004, he [Schumacher] immediately became an inspiration for all those who love motorsport in the Kingdom [of Bahrain], and it is therefore natural that we pay tribute to him in this way.
Sabine Kehm, the spokesperson for the German, stated that the family welcomed the decision, adding: “I am convinced that Michael will love the idea and feel very honored that a corner of the BIC bears his name.”
This is not the first track to honor Michael Schumacher in this way; in fact, the Nürburgring named the esses located after the hairpin in honor of the native of Hürth-Hermülheim in 2007, the ‘Schumacher S’.
