Sahara Force India invests in GP2
The ties between F1 and GP2 have just become even closer. Sahara Force India has decided to partner with the Hilmor team, which allows them to strengthen their pool of young drivers, with Facu Regalia.
Since its inception, GP2 has positioned itself as the ideal gateway to access F1. Indeed, by holding its entire championship at the same time as F1 races, it offers drivers the opportunity to race in front of F1 decision-makers and thus maximize their chances of reaching the pinnacle of motorsports.
Many F1 teams have already implemented more or less formalized programs with GP2 training. In the past, DAMS served as a Junior Team for the Renault F1 Team, which allowed Eric Boullier, its then-director, to lead Lotus following the French team’s acquisition by Genii Capital. More recently, the French team ART Grand Prix has built special relationships with McLaren, leading to Stoffel Vandoorne’s appointment for the 2014 season.
It is now Sahara Force India that formally takes the step, with an association with the German team Hilmor Motorsport. The collaboration will be most visible as the GP2 team will adopt the black, orange, and white color scheme of the Anglo-Indian team. Vijay Mallya, the director of Force India, stated: “As a team, we have always emphasized the development of young drivers. I am therefore delighted to announce our partnership with a GP2 team. This is the next logical step when we want to develop the new generation of drivers and provide them with the opportunity to showcase their talent. Our presence in GP2 brings us closer to a comprehensive development program to educate drivers from karting to the highest levels of professional motorsports.”
Hilmor will also welcome Facu Regalia, the current GP3 vice-champion. He will be able to make his debut in the higher category while joining the young driver program established by the team. He will be supported in this by the 200,000 euros grant provided by Pirelli, as part of its support for GP2 and GP3, since Daniil Kyvat, the reigning champion, was directly promoted to F1 as a full-time driver with Toro Rosso in F1.
