Night race confirmed for Bahrain in 2014

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of its first appearance on the Formula 1 calendar, Bahrain decided to mark the occasion in a big way in 2014 by organizing a night race, as it had been announced recently. While this announcement a few weeks ago was just a possibility, it was confirmed over the weekend by the circuit’s boss.

Salman bin Isa al-Khalifa, the head of the Sakhir circuit also known as the International Circuit of Bahrain (BIC), has indeed confirmed that the necessary infrastructure to host such an event has recently been put in place for the staging of a Formula 1 night Grand Prix in 2014.

« It is by far the largest development project we have ever undertaken at the BIC since the construction of the circuit. I don’t think there is a better way for us to mark our 10th anniversary in F1 by demonstrating our long-term commitment to this sport through significant investment,” Salman bin Isa al-Khalifa told Reuters.

The technical equipment installed includes 495 light poles, located between 10 and 45 meters high, and this should allow the race to be broadcast in high definition without any issues according to Reuters.

At present, Abu Dhabi – another F1 destination in the Middle East – organizes a dusk race, which starts during the day to finish at night but the only night race on the calendar is in Singapore – present since 2008. According to the first official version of the 2014 calendar, the Bahrain Grand Prix 2014 is scheduled to take place on April 6.
