Sir Frank Williams interested in Ross Brawn
As Ross Brawn's future with Mercedes seems uncertain, Sir Frank Williams revealed in Abu Dhabi that if the Briton were to become available, he might interest the Grove team.
The future of Ross Brawn within the Mercedes AMG F1 team is more than uncertain, especially following the latest rumors of the Briton’s departure from the German team. If Brawn were to leave, which Niki Lauda, the non-executive director of the Mercedes team, does not wish for, he should not have trouble finding another project to get involved in.
He is notably mentioned on the Honda side for the return of the Japanese manufacturer as an engine supplier for McLaren starting in 2015, but the Williams team would not be opposed to the return of the one who worked for the Grove team as a machinist in 1978 during the team’s inception.
In any case, this is what Sir Frank Williams, the head of the eponymous team, admitted in the Abu Dhabi paddock to Sky Sports F1: « Naively, perhaps, I am not aware that Ross is available. When he was with us, he was truly incredibly intelligent in terms of engineering – he has a gift – and I am certain he has accumulated much more knowledge, both on what not to do and what to do. If he were to join us, it would be a real plus. »
Even though Sir Frank Williams is interested in Ross Brawn’s profile, he is still hesitant to make him a formal recruitment offer: « I was not aware that he was available. I might contact him now, and I can’t say more. The reason I am hesitant is that I already employ people, and it is highly unlikely that we could afford Ross, or that he would want to join us, etc., etc., and all it would do if we didn’t have Ross would be to upset everyone who is already part of the team. »
Involved in Formula 1 since 1978, Ross Brawn has a profile – with extensive experience within teams like Williams, Benetton, Ferrari, Honda, and Mercedes – that could attract the majority of F1 teams if he were to leave the venture with the star marque at the end of the year.
