Sunday: Ferrari managed to limit the damage in the race

Scuderia Ferrari expected a difficult weekend in Abu Dhabi and was not disappointed, even though they managed to limit the damage in the race. Fernando Alonso is happy to finish 5th, while Felipe Massa believes his strategy was not the best and that he could have done better than 8th.

Sunday: Ferrari managed to limit the damage in the race

Fernando Alonso – 5th:

I’m happy to have scored points for the team in a race that was expected to be complicated, during what has been a difficult weekend for us. Given the gap with the top 4, we couldn’t have done more. Starting from far back, we knew we’d be in traffic, but having had a very good start, I tried to overtake as much as possible. When we saw we were still behind another car, it became impossible to make only one stop, and it was clear we needed to make two stops and push hard. Since the mediums held up quite well, we thought of using the softs to try and make a few quick laps. As for what happened with Vergne after the second stop, I don’t know what the stewards will say [no penalty in the end, editor’s note], but the rules say that when you have the car alongside the other, you can use all the space. But it was just a small incident in a race that, for me, was fantastic. Now, if we don’t want to give up our fight in the constructors’ championship, we absolutely have to do better and finish the last two races on the podium.

Felipe Massa – 8th:

Today, I was competitive from the start to the finish and made some nice overtakes with a car that behaved well. It was a great race. Our strategy was based on a one-stop plan, but when we realized that the pace was too fast for the rear tires and the wear was greater than expected, we decided to make a second stop to avoid taking risks. Choosing the mediums instead of the softs was not the best decision, because the softs were at least a second faster per lap; I managed to do 19 laps with them in my first stint so it wouldn’t have been a problem to do the same in the last stint. It’s really a shame because we could have finished at least in 5th place, and even though it’s not the result we deserve, I’m happy with my performance. Now, we are heading to Texas and Brazil, two circuits that should suit our car better and where I hope to be competitive again.
