No sanctions taken in the investigation concerning Alonso and Vergne
Fernando Alonso was under investigation following the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Spanish driver engaged in a fierce battle with Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne as he exited the pits, overtaking him outside the track limits. Ultimately, the race stewards did not impose any penalties on them.
During his second pit stop, Fernando Alonso came out side by side with Jean-Eric Vergne. The Toro Rosso driver was not intimidated and forced Alonso to continue his race outside the track limits. Alonso was then able to overtake the Toro Rosso by staying inside the next corner.
The FIA announced that the incident would be analyzed after the race. Fernando Alonso then risked a penalty. At 4:30 PM, Fernando Alonso and Jean-Eric Vergne were summoned by the FIA to explain the racing incident they had during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix; Fernando Alonso was accused of violating Article 20.2 of the 2013 Sporting Regulations by gaining an advantage off the track.
Finally, the FIA and the track marshals did not impose any sanctions. The statement indicates: « When car number 3 left the track at turns 3-4, the stewards believe that the driver had no choice since car number 18 was very close. Car 18 was reaching the end of its stint with very worn tires. The telemetry confirms that car 3 was significantly faster than car 18 on soft tires. The explanations from the drivers were very clear and the incident could not have been avoided but no advantage was gained from this incident. »
