Sunday: Mercedes tries to catch up with Ferrari
With a fourth and fifth place for Rosberg and Hamilton, the two drivers, hindered by the arrival of the safety car, managed to bring 22 points to their team after a disappointing race according to the two drivers, but one that still allowed them to gradually catch up to Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship.
Nico Rosberg – 4th: « I got off to a good start today and the pace of our car was really good tonight. The safety car came at a very bad time for us and maybe it wasn’t the best decision to stay out, but at that moment we didn’t know if our tires could go the distance. I then had some rubber stuck in my front wing after the safety car came out and it cost me a lot in terms of performance for a few laps and impacted my race because my tires suffered more than they should have. We could possibly have been second today, but the events of the race just didn’t go our way so it’s a bit disappointing to finish only in fourth place. We now have to learn from this weekend and focus on the next race in Korea. »
Lewis Hamilton – 5th: « It was a really tough race, probably the most physically demanding of the year. We did our best and the car was good tonight, but unfortunately we paid the price for not qualifying better yesterday. I didn’t get the best start and went wide on the first corner to avoid Mark [Webber]. From there, it was difficult to keep track of the race and my position. While the timing of the safety car certainly didn’t help us, we need to go back in our strategy and see what we might have done differently in this situation. However, I’m not sure we could have done what Fernando and Kimi did by staying on that set of tires for so long. Of course, it’s a bit disappointing to come away with only fifth place, but I gave it everything out there and we’ll come back stronger. Our goal is to catch up to Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship and see if we can get another win before the end of the season. »
