Schumacher believes that Vettel can equal his 7 titles
Sebastian Vettel seems well on his way to securing a fourth world championship title by the end of this year, and Michael Schumacher believes that his young compatriot will one day be able to match his record of seven world championship titles, or even surpass it.
Sebastian Vettel has often been compared to Michael Schumacher since the beginning of his career, and he has notably been given the nickname “Baby Schumi,” but the Red Bull driver believes he cannot be compared to his illustrious compatriot as the two men do not have the same track records at the moment.
« I have won three titles, which is nothing compared to seven. Beating his record is not something that can happen in the next few years, so I don’t even think about it. I’ve had some very good years but that can change very quickly, » explained Vettel as quoted by Marca.
But the seven-time world champion has a different view and believes that Vettel could very well equal him or even beat him in the years to come if he continues like this, especially since he is on track to win his 4th title at 26 years old, whereas Schumacher had to wait until he was 32 to achieve this.
« He has the best package, and championships are generally won by the best. Records are made to be broken. They motivated me when I was racing, and in the end, I succeeded [in breaking them]. Believe me, if Sebastian were able to surpass what I did, I would be thrilled for him. He has won three titles in a short period, so why couldn’t he win seven? » Schumacher told Belgian television Vier.
This year, with eight Grand Prix remaining until the end of the season, Sebastian Vettel holds a rather comfortable lead of 46 points over his runner-up, Fernando Alonso, with 200 points still up for grabs. Even though this fourth title is not yet secured, Niki Lauda believes that the German is on the right track and should even be able to clinch the title before the last race of the season, unlike last year.
« I would even go so far as to say that Vettel will be world champion in Abu Dhabi, two races before the end of the season. His lead was already significant when he dominated in Spa, even if the track didn’t really suit the Red Bull. Maybe he’s not the favorite for Monza, but on all the other circuits, he has the best car. That’s more than enough for him, » said Lauda to Bild.
