Hamilton: It’s “too early” to think about the title
After his victory in Hungary, his first with Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton seems to position himself as a title contender, but the Briton believes it is still too early to think about a potential championship win at the end of the season.
By winning the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton confirmed that he would be a front-runner until the end of the season and perhaps even in the fight for the world championship title. The Briton is still 4th in the drivers’ standings, 48 points behind leader Sebastian Vettel, but he is now only 9 points behind the 3rd place Fernando Alonso and 10 behind the second, Kimi Räikkönen.
At the wheel of a recovered Mercedes, Hamilton secured a great victory and valuable points on Sunday, but he stated during the FIA press conference after the race that it was still too early to truly think about the title: “I think it’s too early… too far, too soon… obviously, when you win a race like that, you’re excited and you think anything is possible, and obviously today [Sunday] showed that anything is possible, but it is still too early for us to say whether we will be able to compete against these guys [Vettel and Räikkönen].”
World champion in 2008, in his second year in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton has never hidden his desire to win another world championship title, and his transfer to Mercedes may have been the right choice to give him the best chances of achieving it, considering the difficulties McLaren has faced since the beginning of the year.
