Sunday: Red Bull widens the gap, even without a victory
While Sebastian Vettel kept pace with Lewis Hamilton at the beginning of the race, the German was forced to let victory slip away behind Jenson Button. The reigning triple world champion damaged his front wing during the battle with the Brit. Mark Webber, meanwhile, had a solid race on an alternate strategy to gain 6 positions.
Sebastian Vettel – 3rd:
I would have liked the race to last a bit longer because it was fun with Kimi at the end. It was difficult to overtake on this track; I was getting closer, but I wasn’t in the right place to overtake at that point; I tried to do something in the following corners, but it didn’t work out. The main problem in this race was being stuck behind Jenson, and he is not to blame for that: I lost more time than I expected during my first stop, and we came out just behind him. I couldn’t overtake; I tried to push, but I damaged my front wing, which was a mistake on my part. I may have tried to rush things a bit too much. It was very close with Kimi, and it’s great to be back on the podium today. Congratulations to Lewis, he did a good job today.
Mark Webber – 4th:
« I think we had the right strategy. I knew there was a lot of pressure because we needed a good first lap and I had a clear track, so it worked well. The start was good, and the first sector was very good; I was able to put some pressure on Kimi, and we stayed like that. The car was somewhat tricky during the first three or four laps compared to the others, as I knew the very grippy soft tires, and after that, we pushed hard. I don’t think we could have achieved more than this result today. The strategy was quite solid, and you have to preserve your soft tires until the end. »
