Sunday: Red Bull concerned about cameraman’s condition despite victory
While Vettel had never won at home, the German finally climbed to the top step of the podium in front of his fans after being under enormous pressure from the Lotus drivers. Mark Webber, on the other hand, saw his race marred by an incident in the pit lane: his right rear wheel came off and hit a cameraman, who escaped without serious injury.
Sebastian Vettel – 1st: « It was a tough race, one of the most difficult in a while. I was relieved that the race didn’t last two or three more laps because Kimi was faster toward the end. I’m really happy with how it went, and it’s really special. The team worked very hard to give me the chance to win this weekend, and we did it. First of all, it’s important to remember that it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to race in your home country; we have about 20 races, but there are obviously more than 20 countries, so it’s special to race at home and have so much support. I got a good start and focused on each lap throughout the race. You don’t really think about where you are when you’re driving; you can’t let your mind wander, but when the checkered flag appeared and the race was over, I really let myself enjoy the moment on the parade lap and saw a lot of people in the stands cheering and waving flags. Those images will stay in my mind for a very, very long time. »
Mark Webber – 7th: « I knew we lost a tire during the pit stop, but not that it had hit someone. It’s sad, and I hope he’s okay, that’s the most important thing. Today was a bit like a nightmare you want to wake up from the next day by thinking about something else to move forward. We made an excellent start and were in a good position until the first stop with Seb, but we lost everything. We lost a lot of points today and a chance to fight for the win, but there’s no turning back now. »
