Massa thinks he is a strong contender this season
Currently ranked 5th in the drivers' championship, Felipe Massa believes he is a strong contender in the race for the world champion title. After 69 races without victories, the Ferrari driver continues to hope following a rather encouraging start to the season.
Felipe Massa achieved good results in the first two qualifying sessions of 2013, finishing ahead of his teammate, Fernando Alonso, each time. However, success has not followed on Sunday, as the last race won by the Brazilian driver was in 2008, at home on the Interlagos circuit.
However, this does not discourage the Paulistano: « To win, we must be confident and I am. I don’t think we had the car to win in Malaysia, but it was competitive enough for the podium. If we continue on this path, we will increase our chances of victory and our chances to fight for the title. Despite everything, we must keep our feet on the ground, we have done an excellent job on the car since last year, but there is still a lot to do. »
The task is not easy, however, as the driver has to face other big teams such as Red Bull and Mercedes: « Of course, Red Bull may be even stronger at the moment but we will see. Mercedes is there and Lotus is very competitive too. It will be an interesting and difficult season, but we will be there without a doubt. »
For the team’s director Stefano Domenicali, it is still too early to make predictions and say where Ferrari stands in relation to its competitors, but he is convinced that it will be in the running for the title by the end of the year: « I don’t know exactly where we are but I am sure that we are among the leaders. There are circuits where our car will perform better and there are others where competing cars do better than ours. »
