Melbourne builds a Vettel grandstand
As last year, Melbourne must deal with a significant demand from spectators. The organizers have therefore decided to build an additional stand, named in honor of Sebastian Vettel.
In 2012, the Australian Grand Prix created a high demand that exceeded the capacity initially planned by the management. They therefore added a grandstand between the pit exit and the first corner.
This year is more ambitious as it plans to add an additional grandstand between turns 3, 4, and 5. Furthermore, in their tradition of naming the different grandstands in honor of world champions, the organizers of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation have decided to name this new grandstand in honor of the triple world champion, Sebastian Vettel. Both Red Bull drivers will therefore have their own grandstand since the local favorite, Mark Webber, has also been given this honor.
We thus sense a slight triumphalism in the words of the AGPC president, Ron Walker, who takes the opportunity to silence his critics: « No one organizes a Grand Prix like Melbourne, and this year will be no exception. As we are the first race of the year, there is great anticipation and excitement that always translates into a superb event for everyone. Stunning images of our city, its beaches, and the bay will be broadcast to millions of viewers around the world when they turn on their televisions to watch the inaugural race of the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship on a picturesque street circuit. »
But the stands for the average person are not the only ones to fall short of demand. Indeed, the Paddock Club, the hospitality area for VIP guests of teams and sponsors, has also been expanded to meet demand. This time, however, the Melbourne organizers don’t have a particular interest in it: unlike regular ticket sales, the revenues from the Paddock Club go to Bernie Ecclestone’s FOM.
