Eleventh year of agreement between PPG Industries and Williams
In the series of long-term agreements extended by Williams, the one with PPG Industries is added. The American company thus begins its eleventh year of association with the Grove team.
PPG Industries’ products are particularly visible as they are the paints used on the race cars! While it’s important for the marketing department that the paint colors look good on television and match well with the team sponsors’ logos, from an engineering perspective, they primarily represent weight and therefore a handicap.
All the teams are therefore trying to reduce the weight related to this paint. That’s why it’s essential for them to form partnerships with companies capable of providing them with coating products that are both efficient (meaning they last over time in terms of both aerodynamics and visual appearance) and lightweight. For example, it can be noted that other teams have agreements with specialists in the sector, notably McLaren with AkzoNobel and Marussia with CarPlan. Williams seems to have reached a good compromise with PPG, as its leaders estimate the weight savings to be around 30% compared to traditional paints.
But for PPG Industries, F1 is also an excellent way to demonstrate the excellence of its products in very challenging conditions. Jérôme Zamblera, the marketing director for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region of the brand, comments on the current agreement: « Formula 1 demands the best and expects excellence.
