Rosberg prefers winning over beating Schumacher

Regularly cited as one of the most talented drivers on the grid, Nico Rosberg, a Mercedes AMG driver for two seasons now, still doesn't have a Formula 1 victory to his name. Nevertheless, reaching the top step of the podium remains his goal, and beating Schumacher two years in a row is only a consolation.

Rosberg prefers winning over beating Schumacher

After staying too long at Williams and following 108 Grand Prix starts, Nico Rosberg is still chasing his first victory in the premier category. The German, who is more determined than ever to score his first win with Mercedes, confirmed that victory remains his main goal, with everything else being merely a secondary source of satisfaction.

By “the rest,” it should be understood as giving a hard time to his illustrious teammate, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. Leading his elder by 70 points in 2010 (142 points against 72 for Schumacher), and by 13 points last season (89 against 76), Keke’s son repeats that beating his teammate is not his main goal: « Of course, beating Michael gives me a certain satisfaction. I was happy to be ahead of him last year, but the most important thing now is to win races. Last season wasn’t great because it was a step back compared to my first season at Mercedes. Now, it’s important to turn the page and improve. »

« Last year, we had good winter tests, I was sure we were right behind Red Bull » he continues, « but, in the end, it didn’t turn out that way. We have learned over the past two years to be more cautious with predictions. »

The 26-year-old German driver also reflected on his team’s performance during the 2010 season to express his expectations for the upcoming championship: « Winning this season would mark the beginning of an upward trajectory for the team. That was not the case in previous seasons. Last year we were clearly the 4th team. In 2010, we sometimes managed to reach the top 3, and it is important that we manage to replicate these results. »

Here are ambitions that seem to align with those of Norbert Haug, the sporting director of Mercedes AMG. 2014 thus appears to be the meeting point for the members of Mercedes, but it remains to be seen whether Michael Schumacher will be part of it at that time.
