Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso finished on top on the second day of private testing in Valencia. With 15 drivers testing today, the track was quite busy and problems multiplied…
This second day of testing in the 2011 Formula 1 season was sunnier than the previous one. Despite the cold, many drivers completed around a hundred laps. This was the case for Fernando Alonso, Paul di Resta, and Robert Kubica.
As yesterday, the leading duo bears the same name, Ferrari and Red Bull. Vettel and Alonso were neck and neck all day, and it’s finally the Spaniard, the 2011 world vice-champion, who finishes three-tenths ahead of the German and his RB7. Di Resta is third with the slightly modified 2010 Force India. Hamilton’s McLaren secures fourth position, but it is also part of the obsolete cars, with only the nose having been somewhat modified.
Robert Kubica did a lot of laps today. He achieved the 5th best performance, the third among the 2011 cars. But the surprise of the day comes from Narain Karthikeyan’s HRT. The Indian climbs to 6th place, just over a second behind Alonso’s best time. Nico Rosberg is 7th with his MGPW02. He stopped only once today due to a failure provoked by the team to test the car’s fuel tank capacity and consumption. The objective was to see how far the car could go before running out of fuel.
The teams will take to the track one last time tomorrow for the third day of testing. They will head to Jerez to continue adjustments in a week. Only Team Lotus will remain at the circuit until Friday to also have three days of testing.
