Alonso defends the performances of Romain Grosjean at Renault

After his very poor qualifying session, Fernando Alonso admitted he was not surprised and defended his performances and those of his teammate. According to him, the car he is currently driving is simply the worst on the grid.

By failing to reach Q2 this afternoon in Abu Dhabi, Fernando Alonso lamented the poor performance of his car. The double world champion will start from 16th place on the grid tomorrow for his last Grand Prix with Renault before leaving the diamond for Ferrari.

These performances are expected. We’ve been at the back of the grid since the start of the weekend, so it’s logical to be knocked out in Q1…

The team knows that during the seven years I was with them, I gave 100% of my abilities. We know we probably have the worst car on the grid, and it’s the same for my teammate Grosjean. But that’s how it is.

The Iberian thus wanted to defend the Frenchman, uncertain about his future in F1 next year: « Romain [Grosjean] is a good driver but he doesn’t have the right car. If you put him right now in Kobayashi’s place, in the Toyota, I’m sure he would be fighting for the podium! »

In the meantime, Grosjean is 19th and risks experiencing his last Grand Prix with the team that gave him a seat in F1.
