A beautiful Grand Prix ends in a flourish as both the Driver and Constructor championships have just been awarded. Brawn GP has managed to stay at the top since the first Grand Prix of the season in Australia. Jenson Button succeeds another Englishman, Lewis Hamilton, as the king of Formula 1, taking the 2009 world championship title. This somewhat anticipated outcome this season occurred after an exciting race where Mark Webber (Red Bull) won this Brazilian GP on the Interlagos circuit. On the podium, we also see Robert Kubica still with BMW-Sauber, and Lewis Hamilton, who made a fantastic comeback from 17th to 3rd place. The podium was somewhat overshadowed by Button’s joy in the paddocks. An exhilarating race indeed with many retirements and numerous overtakes. In the end, 14 drivers crossed the finish line. Behind Webber, Kubica, and Hamilton, are the three contenders for the driver’s title before the start of the Grand Prix. Vettel (Red Bull) is in 4th, Button in 5th, and finally Barrichello, after a slow puncture, finishes 8th, but the title is thus won by the Briton. Meanwhile, Räikkönen (Ferrari) is still in the points with 6th place, Buemi is 7th and scores two points. Toro Rosso can therefore be satisfied.

In detail and with one race left in the season, Button is the world champion with a total of 89 points. Vettel takes the runner-up spot by two points over Barrichello (74 to 72). The Abu Dhabi race will determine the runner-up status behind Button. Webber is 4th with an additional 10 points. Hamilton and Räikkönen are still fighting for the 5th position. Advantage tonight goes to Hamilton who moves ahead of the Finn after a podium finish by one point (49 to 48). From 7th to 12th place, there are no changes since none of these drivers scored any points. We find Rosberg followed by Trulli, Alonso, Glock, Kovalainen, and Massa. Kubica takes the 13th position from his teammate Heidfeld (17 to 15 points). Fisichella, Sutil, Buemi, and Bourdais remain in 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th positions. Notably, Buemi scores two points.
In the constructors’ championship, Brawn GP has a sufficient lead before the final race of the season. The Brackley team is world champion ahead of Red Bull, which will remain its runner-up. The battle continues fiercely for the 3rd place, but like the battle between Hamilton and Räikkönen, McLaren has the advantage tonight by one point (71 to 70 points). Toyota remains 5th and Williams 6th, but watch out for BMW’s resurgence over several Grand Prix. The Hinwil team is 7th with 2.5 points behind the Grove team (34.5 to 32 points). Renault could stir things up as it has 26 points. Force India and Toro Rosso are still at the back, but Toro Rosso is getting slightly closer to the Indian team.
