Timo Glock will not be on the starting grid for the Japanese Grand Prix. The Toyota team confirmed this on Sunday morning following a heavy accident during qualifying yesterday. He was airlifted to the nearest hospital as he was suffering from back pain and had a 5 cm cut on his left leg. He actually crashed head-on into the safety barrier at the exit of the chicane on the last lap.
Although the X-rays revealed no serious injuries, the team decided it would be wiser for Glock to rest so that he would be at full capacity for the Brazilian Grand Prix in two weeks.
The team also confirmed that they requested permission for their reserve driver Kamui Kobayashi to replace the German. He had already taken part in Friday’s practice sessions as Glock was unwell at the time. However, this request was denied by the race stewards due to a regulation that stipulates a driver must participate at least in the second day’s practice session, namely the free practice 3.
I tried everything to be fit for the Japanese Grand Prix but in the end, it’s not possible for me to race. It is unfortunate to miss Toyota’s home race and I am annoyed that this has happened. I want to thank my team because they worked all night to repair the damage to the car and ensure readiness for the race. They did a great job, but unfortunately, I cannot participate in the race, but I am sure I will be back in Brazil.
